Methylene Chloride

Dichloromethane (DCM), also known as methylene chloride, is a volatile, colorless liquid with a sweet odor. It is a chlorinated hydrocarbon widely used as a solvent in various industrial and laboratory applications. Its chemical formula is CH₂Cl₂.

  • Physical Properties

Colorless liquid with a sweet, chloroform-like odor.

    Boiling point: 39.6°C (103.3°F); Melting point: -97.6°C (-143.7°F).

Slightly soluble in water but highly soluble in organic solvents like alcohol, ether, and acetone.

    Density: 1.33 g/cm³ at 20°C

    Chemical Properties

DCM is a non-flammable solvent with low reactivity.

It can dissolve a wide range of organic compounds, including fats, oils, resins, and polymers. It is relatively stable but can react with strong oxidizing agents.

    Common Uses

Solvent in Industry: DCM is widely used in the paint stripping, cleaning, and coating industries as a solvent for resins, oils, and fats.

Chemical Synthesis: It is used in the production of pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and pesticides as a solvent and intermediate.

Laboratory Use: Methylene chloride is often used in laboratories for extraction, cleaning, and as a solvent in chemical reactions.

Aerosols and Paint Removers: It is used in some aerosol products, including spray paints and paint remover
